10 Health Centers in Ethiopia to be Equipped with Solar PV

April, 2022

Launched in July 2017 by the German Development Minister Gerd Müller, the Green People’s Energy initiative of GIZ was set up with the objective to support the development of decentralized renewable energy systems in rural regions of Africa with the involvement of local stakeholders and private investors.

In line with this goal, 10 health centers in the regions of Amhara, Oromia, SNNP, and Sidama are being equipped with Solar-PV systems in March and April of 2022. The health centers were chosen carefully with the assistance of the regional energy bureaus of Ethiopia’s Federal Ministry of Water and Energy (MoWE), the project’s political partner. This energy system enables the health centers to run electricity through all hours of the day and light enabling them to not only provide a broader range of services, such as electric laboratory equipment but also to be fully operational at night, which will be especially beneficial for childbirth or emergency surgeries. Heat-sensitive medical drugs and vaccines can now be cooled, which is especially helpful in GBE’s quest to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.

The true extent of this action can perhaps be felt in the statement given by Belay Ragga, regional manager of the GIZ energy portfolio in SNNP and Sidama, when he said, “From my experience over the last 10 years in the SNNP-region I realized that solar electrification for remote off-grid health institutions can mean the difference between life and death.”
